Fun Facts About Clover, SC

Clover, SC, is more than 125 years old, and during that time, it has accumulated several interesting facts about the town. The following are some fun facts you may not know about Clover, even if you’ve lived there your entire life:

History

In the 1800s, steam engines were the transportation method of choice across the country. To keep these steam engines running, they needed ample fuel and water supplies. The original site for Clover started as a water stop for steam engines on the Chester and Lenore Narrow Gauge Railroad halfway between Yorkville and Gastonia. Supposedly, water from the 5,000-gallon cistern spilled to the ground, allowing for a rich patch of clover to appear. Over time, railroad workers referred to the water stop as “Clover Patch.”

A charter officially established the town on Christmas Eve in 1887. Textile production became the main source of revenue for most people in the area, and the town grew up around this industry. The cotton mills and textile industry slowly petered out after World War II. Today, you’ll find historic downtown shopping, outdoor recreation, and restaurants instead of cotton mills in the area.

Sister City

Clover has a sister city across the Atlantic Ocean. Larne in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, is Clover's twin or sister city. The sister status means both towns can share recognition of each other in their native countries. For instance, in Clover, the local Ulster American Society (UAS) has promoted the creation of commemorative plaques on welcome signs in the town marking the sister cities’ relationship. The organization also hosts an annual Irish Heritage Appreciation Month in September and competitions for young artists and authors each March.

Clover has grown from its origins as a textile town into a bustling suburb of Charlotte. If you live here, you’ll find several things to do. Try out the following activities around Clover to renew interest in your hometown and rediscover why it’s so great:

Kings Mountain National Military Park

Kings Mountain National Military Park marks the site of a decisive battle in the American Revolution, the battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. This park includes a visitor center where you can see informative exhibits about the battle, backcountry campsites, horseback riding trails, and walking and hiking trails. The walking trail is a self-guided interpretive walking tour of the battle site and a shorter distance than any backcountry hiking trail. The 16 miles of backcountry trails are more rustic and best for those with a longer-distance hiking experience.

Kings Mountain State Park

While they share a name, Kings Mountain State Park is not affiliated with the National Park of the same name. The state park in Clover includes 6,885 acres of parkland for visitors to enjoy. Several types of campsites will fulfill whatever form of connecting with nature you enjoy – RV camping, tent camping, and equestrian camping. The park has over 20 miles of hiking trails, two lakes, and five picnic shelters. Whether you want to camp overnight or just visit for the day, you’ll find more than enough to do at Kings Mountain State Park.

Bear’s Den
